Turbo Charge VS Super Charged Engine
Turbo and Super are two amplified words the defines greatness. They convey the same meaning. But when used with cars, even with aviation or motorcycles, they are totally different. In automobile, they are always associated with the engines. Engines propels any cars into full speed. If a car is said to be fast, it is surely with the engine. Turbo Charger and Super Charger engines are the two well known force induction system in the car. Both are bearing strong words. But aside from the adjectives leading the word engine, the two is totally different.
TURBO CHARGER is a gas compressor used for force-induction of an internal combustion engine. It is only a “form” of supercharger. Mainly, turbocharger is used to increase the density of air that enters the create to come up with more power. It's compressor is powered by turbine, which is driven by the engine's own exhaust gases.
SUPER CHARGER on the other hand is an air compressor, but it is also used for force-induction of an internal combustion engine. The greater mass flow-rate provides more oxygen to support combustion than would be available in a naturally-aspirated engine, which allows more fuel to be provided and more work to be done per cycle, increasing the power output of the engine.
A supercharger can be powered mechanically by a belt, gear, shaft, or chain connected to the engine's crankshaft. It can also be powered by an exhaust gas turbine. A turbine-driven supercharger is known as a turbocharger. (from Wikipedia)
The most notable difference between the two is the (source of) power supply. Turbocharger gets its power from the exhaust stream. It will run through a turbine and will turn spin the compressor. On supercharger, there is a belt connected directly to the engine. It gets power just like ho water pump or alternator does.
A supercharger needs energy to be bled to be able to run. The main disadvantage of a supercharger is that it hast to burn extra fuel to provide power to turn the engine. This engine is also more open to a human error. This is because supercharger is controlled entirely by the pilot. On the other hand, a turbocharger functions using the exhaust gases. Wasted heat is extracted from the exhaust gas and being concerted into a useful source of power to compress the intake air. Turbochargers, especially the modern ones, use an automatic wastegate that controls the manifold pressure within parameters as set by the manufacturer. It is more possible that there will be no overboost and damage to the engine on turbocharger than supercharger.
In an arguable conclusion, turbocharger is more efficient because it uses “wasted” energy in the exhaust stream as the source of power. It is the cause of some amount of back pressure in the exhaust system and tends to provide less boost. Superchargers are easier to install but as expected, more expensive.
