Metal in microwave??????????
(sorry about all the question marks ... title has to be 20 characters long)
I'm living in a fancy schmancy mansion with fancy schmancy appliances (long story) and the microwave has a metal tray in it. Since when was metal in microwaves okay (it is ceramic-coated metal though)?
It's a Gaggenau microwave ... it also works as a grill though ... but is it really a microwave??
I'm anti-microwave so it would be cool if it is really a high tech microwave-like non-microwave, but the manual just calls it a microwave and doesn't go into much detail because it has to fit about 10 languages into the manual, or because you already bought it so they don't need to sell you it.
Anyways, what's your thoughts? Any microwave pros out there?
I don't know, it works just like a microwave (even with the Metal Stand in it), no sparks or the like and heats food up quick like a microwave should, but it also works like a grill.

If metal was not allowed in microwaves, then how are they MADE out of metal?
Think on that for a bit.
The problem is not large pieces of metal - the problem is smaller pieces of metal close enough to a larger piece where an electrical arc can occur. There are ways to use metal in a microwave to where it does not arc.
For example, some pop-top microwavable meals (used to be called Lunch Buckets, years ago) have a metal rim around it. The rim is smooth, is not grooved or has any gaps - it goes in the microwave fine, as long as it isn't touching the metal wall of the microwave, it does just fine.
Metal doesn't absorb microwaves, it reflects it -and only when you get two pieces of metal close, but not touching, in a microwave does it cause problems.
Crinkled aluminum foil can create arcs - but not a perfectly flat piece.
Steel wool, because it has so many tiny little gaps in it, creates many arcs and catches fire in a microwave.
So it isn't like metal isn't allowed in the microwave - but it can be used in a safe manner if you know what you are doing.
