Why does my coffee always smell and taste burned?
I almost never make coffee, but when I do it always smells burned (not that wonderful coffee aroma) and tastes kind of stale and burned too. I used to attribute it to stale coffee, but I have also tried grinding from fresh-bought beans and I've also tried fresh ground coffee from the coffee store. Is there something wrong with my coffeemaker? (a standard 4-Cup Black and decker basic) Do I need to clean it? Or is it the ratio? (1 1/2 tbl per cup) Or maybe it's brewing for too long? Not long enough? I need to figure it out so I can offer coffee to company at my house!
Old coffee (Commercial Coffee is old before it is put on the shelves)
Try finding a local roaster and ask for a good FRESHLY ROASTED Whole Bean coffee, and tell him you do not want BOLD type (That's the code word for Burnt)...
I would attempt to located a nice Costa RIca or a Guatemala and possibly a Ethiopian such as Sidamo....
FInd a MELITTA Brew Cone and do a simple pour over type brew. All you need is FRESH ROASTED coffee, the brew cone, some cone filters to fit and a source of hot water (just off the boil is best).
You put your grounds in the filter, the filter in the cone, and the cone over a cup or thermos. Pour the HOT water over the grounds and allow to drip through. This method separates the fresh from the stale....You WILL taste the difference.... but stay away from BOLD and Dark roasts until you see what good coffee is suppose to taste like...
