Clutch Rubber
When reasonably drop the clutch I think I hear a rubber belt slipping mostly in the morning?
It is a high pitched screech sound for just 1-2 seconds then all is fine, it is like a belt slipping sound during acceleration. I know the Mazda3 uses a chain, but are their rubber belts elsewhere? It appears I am losing 1-2 mpg on a tank. Or could this be something related to the clutch not the engine per se?
Could be the belt tensioner, if it is an oil-pressurized one, then it might be something else. Either way, get the accessory drive belt inspected to see if it needs replacing and/or the tensioner.
Oh, and 1-2 mpg is nothing for a car like that. If you average anywhere near thirty for this car, then that could be explained by a shift in driving habits or if it is getting colder.
